Obtain High Levels in a Second Language by Reading

It is estimated that a second language learner can increase their knowledge and vocabulary in a second language from around 2,000 words to 9,000 by reading or an increase of 450%.

Beniko Mason showed that while readers who knew only 2,000 words read between 22 hours reading graded readers language learners that reached 9,000 words read between 333 and 1,223 hours reading complex noveles such as "Hunger Games" or Zane Grey novels.

Given that a reader when they start a concise daily reading plan knows 2,000 words or less and is at a Beginner A1 level according to the CEFR then to reach the upper intermediate level of B2 the learner would then have to read between 600 and 900 hours or to reach the advanced level of language acquisition it would take the reader 1,223. Given if the learner reades an average of 5 hours per week it will take them around 2 years and a half to achieve this goal. If the learner wants to reach the C1 level they should start the consistent reading plan for 3 years reading at least 5 hours per week.

This should not be the only factor applied when considering a goal to learn a second language, but reading is one of the most important areas where learners can continue to acquire knowledge in a second language.

When the reading plan is put in a complete language learning plan along with grammar study, writing, listening and speaking then the learner will be able to reach the upper intermediate level in 2 years and a half.
