The benefits of reading
The benefits of reading
There are many reasons why people read. In general these reason include enjoyment, educational, career improvement, need, and obligation. At times we are told we have to read for school or work. Other times we just want to sit down with a magazine, comic book, poem, short story, novel, novella, essay, etc to just disconnect from the world we know around us and get into an article, book or story that informs, persuades, or entertains us. There are many benefits that come from reading apart from enjoyment. It is important not to read just because I was told to do so or because I have to. We should always find something to read that I will enjoy and when we are helping others that are not interested as well to read something they will enjoy.Benefits or reading come in various ares including improved language development, better interaction with others, cultural awareness, and better general educational output.
When people read they will improve their understanding in various ares of their language ability. If a student is in a program such as an Sustained Silent Reading program then they continuously read in short time spans each day and research has shown that these students have done better then students who do not read 51 out of 54 times. Students will read better, they will read more, they will write better as well as write more, they will improve their spelling, they will expand their vocabulary, and they will improve understanding of grammar structures and use.
When people read more they will be able to interact better with others because reading in ways is said to be interactive depending on if it's only interaction between the author and the reader where the reader thinks about what he is reading, responds to it, and maybe even creates his own conclusions from what they are reading. It is also interactive when they are in a group and discuss what they read, why they like it or dislike it, and what conclusions or endings they might think of for that story.
From reading people gather more cultural awareness giving that if a reader is a new learner of the English language living in the United States or Canada they can read stories about those cultures or that have ideas in them from these cultures. The reader may also read stories from other countries then their own even stories that have been translated. It is very important to dry and diversify reading to be able to read books or stories from other countries that might have cultures that are very different from my own. If you know another language then there is another added benefit of continuing to improve knowledge in that language as you read texts in those languages.
Readers may also improve educational output with continuous reading such as university placement test, international language tests for learners of different languages, improvement in understanding complex research as well as the ability to construct well written essays or educational material.
It is very important to read as it helps in every area of life. Some others are the improvement for those who wish to write for a living such as journalists, authors, blog writers, poets, and so on. These people are helped because they decrease the probability to have writer's block, they are more confident with what they write, and they continue to define their style and the genre in which they chose to write. When people have a habit of continuous reading they also improve their memory and are able to sleep better.
With all this said reading is enjoyable and is very beneficial for every one's life.
