The Importance of reading in a second language

Improve your mental health by reading and being bilingual. It will help people as they progress in life to be consistent readers. There are many benefits to reading in a person’s life including benefits in education and in normal life. To continue, It helps people to read in their native language as well as in a second language because as people read in both languages they have a better understanding of vocabulary, grammatical structure, and can even help people communicate better. This is even more beneficial in a second language because the person is able to improve vocabulary that they did not know and to learn different words that can be used to give different ideas replacing words or ideas that they already know. Furthermore, as people continue to read more and more they are able to understand more complex grammatical structures since they see how these grammar structures can be used for everyday use. People can also see how these grammar structures are used in writing styles. As people read more in their native language or in a second language they are able to understand and relate to different writing styles. This may also increase interest in writing as a hobby or profession. To continue, there are also many benefits to reading that do not relate to education. Some of these benefits include keeping our mind young. This point will be explained in more detailed in the next paragraph. People can increase how well their mind works as well as how sharp or concentrated they stay. When it is said to keep our mind young is that some activities help humans to decrease the probability or time in which they can have some illnesses such as Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease. It may be asked, how this could be possible. When people read they constantly give their brain the exercise and create more connections with their neurons, therefore, they are constantly receiving new vocabulary that will help them to keep their mind active and young. There are three very important ways for people to give their brain a workout and keep their minds young which includes reading in a native as well as second language, becoming bilingual, and drinking coffee. There are countless studies that show if people read more, are bilingual, and drink 3 to 5 cups of coffee per day are less likely to have Dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease.
