Obtain High Levels in a Second Language by Reading It is estimated that a second language learner can increase their knowledge and vocabulary in a second language from around 2,000 words to 9,000 by reading or an increase of 450%. Beniko Mason showed that while readers who knew only 2,000 words read between 22 hours reading graded readers language learners that reached 9,000 words read between 333 and 1,223 hours reading complex noveles such as "Hunger Games" or Zane Grey novels.   Given that a reader when they start a concise daily reading plan knows 2,000 words or less and is at a Beginner A1 level according to the CEFR then to reach the upper intermediate level of B2 the learner would then have to read between 600 and 900 hours or to reach the advanced level of language acquisition it would take the reader 1,223.
